Q: My wife and I are looking for ways to save money and are considering dropping our land-line phone. However, we live in a rural area where cable is not an option, and the cost of Internet via a cell company is outrageous. If we drop our local phone service, can we still get DSL?— L.S., Dalton
A: Stand-alone DSL service — sometimes called naked or dry-loop DSL — is available in some areas, but most local phone companies don't promote it or offer enticing price deals.

Verizon bundles for budgets

Verizon Communications has joined the industry trend of pricing for the downturn, offering $10 to $30 off per month for the first three months of a 12-month triple play or double-play service involving its voice, DSL and DirecTV offerings.

Unlike Qwest, which offered across-the-board savings for a year, and AT&T, which offered 12-month discounts to customers who called in to trim their services, Verizon is offering a three-month discount.
